About the product

Pk-Merz 100 Mg 30 Tablets

Description:

Pk-Merz 100 mg 30 tablets is a prescription medicine containing amantadine, a synthetic antiviral and antiparkinson agent. It is used in the management of Parkinson's disease and Parkinsonian syndromes, and for the prevention and treatment of respiratory infections caused by influenza A virus. By modulating dopaminergic activity in the brain and inhibiting replication of influenza A virus, Pk-Merz helps improve movement symptoms in Parkinson's disease and supports the treatment and prevention of certain viral infections. This product is intended for adult use under medical supervision.

Indications:

  • Parkinson's disease and Parkinsonian syndromes: helps reduce rigidity, tremor, and bradykinesia, and improves overall motor function.
  • Influenza A virus infections: prevention and treatment of respiratory infections caused by influenza A virus, as prescribed by a physician.
  • Herpes zoster (shingles): used as an adjunct in the management of herpes zoster-related pain as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • May be used in other indications where amantadine is specifically prescribed by a physician.

Active Ingredients / Key Components:

  • Amantadine hydrochloride – 100 mg per film-coated tablet (equivalent to 100 mg amantadine). Concentration of other excipients is not available.

Dosage & Administration / How to Use:

  • General: Always use exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change the dose or duration without medical advice.
  • Influenza A (treatment/prevention): 100 mg (1 tablet) once daily for 5 days, or as directed by the physician.
  • Herpes zoster (shingles): 100 mg (1 tablet) twice daily for 14 days; treatment may be continued for another 14 days if pain persists, only under medical supervision.
  • Parkinson's disease: Start with 100 mg (1 tablet) once daily; the dose may be increased after 1 week to 100 mg twice daily if needed. Maximum dose is generally 400 mg/day, divided as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew.
  • Can be taken with or without food; if stomach upset occurs, taking it with food may help.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
  • Use in children, elderly patients, and patients with kidney or liver impairment requires strict medical supervision and dose adjustment.

Clinical Benefits:

  • Helps improve motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease, including stiffness, tremor, and slowness of movement.
  • Provides antiviral activity against influenza A virus, supporting prevention and treatment of influenza A infections when appropriately indicated.
  • May reduce the severity and duration of symptoms associated with influenza A when started early in the course of illness.
  • Acts as an adjunct in the management of herpes zoster, helping to alleviate pain when used as prescribed.

Warnings & Contraindications:

  • Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to amantadine or any component of the formulation.
  • Use with extreme caution in patients with kidney impairment, liver disease, cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, seizure disorders, or psychiatric illness (such as depression, psychosis, or history of suicidal thoughts).
  • May cause dizziness, blurred vision, or confusion; avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing tasks requiring alertness until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • May increase the risk of impulse control disorders (e.g., pathological gambling, increased libido, compulsive spending); inform your doctor if such behaviors appear.
  • Can interact with other medicines, including anticholinergics, other antiparkinson drugs, CNS stimulants, and certain psychiatric medications. Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you are taking.
  • Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Amantadine should only be used in pregnancy or lactation if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk.
  • Use with caution in elderly patients, who may be more sensitive to side effects such as confusion, hallucinations, and orthostatic hypotension.
  • Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without proper medical supervision.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Side Effects:
  • Common side effects: nausea, loss of appetite, dry mouth, dizziness, insomnia, headache, fatigue, swelling of ankles or legs (peripheral edema), and constipation.
  • Neurological/psychiatric effects: confusion, agitation, anxiety, hallucinations, nightmares, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes may occur, especially in elderly patients or at higher doses.
  • Cardiovascular effects: orthostatic hypotension (drop in blood pressure when standing), palpitations, or irregular heartbeat may occur in susceptible individuals.
  • Dermatologic/other effects: livedo reticularis (mottled purplish discoloration of the skin), rash, and increased sensitivity to sunlight have been reported.
  • Serious side effects – seek immediate medical attention: severe confusion or hallucinations, seizures, chest pain, severe dizziness or fainting, difficulty breathing, allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; severe rash), or sudden changes in behavior or mood.
  • If any side effect persists, worsens, or causes concern, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
