Zithromax 500 Mg 3 Tablets
Description:
Zithromax 500 mg is a prescription systemic antibiotic medicine containing azithromycin, a semi-synthetic macrolide of the azalide class. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections affecting the respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues, and certain sexually transmitted infections. Zithromax works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, helping to stop the growth of susceptible bacteria and promote recovery. Each pack contains 3 film-coated tablets, suitable for short-course, once-daily antibiotic therapy as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Indications:
- Treatment of upper and lower respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis, pharyngitis and tonsillitis) caused by susceptible bacteria.
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections (such as uncomplicated skin infections, cellulitis, and infected wounds) due to susceptible organisms.
- Typhoid fever (enteric fever) caused by susceptible Salmonella typhi strains, as directed by a physician.
- Certain sexually transmitted infections, including uncomplicated gonorrhoea, chancroid, chlamydial urethritis and granuloma inguinale, according to medical guidance.
- Prophylaxis and treatment (including secondary prophylaxis) of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in appropriate patients, in combination with other antimycobacterial agents as advised by a specialist.
- Other infections caused by azithromycin-susceptible bacteria as determined by culture, sensitivity testing, and physician judgment.
Active Ingredients / Key Components:
- Azithromycin – 500 mg per film-coated tablet.
- Excipients (film-coating and tablet core) – exact composition and concentrations , please check the product leaflet or the manufacturer’s official website; refer to the official package insert for full excipient list.
Dosage & Administration / How to Use:
- Zithromax 500 mg tablets are for oral use only and should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not self-medicate or change the dose without medical advice.
- General adult dosing examples (for guidance only; always follow your doctor’s specific regimen):
- Respiratory tract, skin and soft tissue infections: 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2 to 5.
- Typhoid fever: 500 mg once daily for 7 days.
- Uncomplicated gonorrhoea: 2 g (2000 mg) as a single dose (requires multiple tablets and medical supervision).
- Granuloma inguinale: initial 1 g (1000 mg) then 500 mg once daily until all lesions have completely healed.
- Chancroid or chlamydial urethritis: 1 g (1000 mg) as a single dose.
- Prophylaxis of disseminated MAC infections: 1.2 g (1200 mg) once weekly, as directed by a specialist.
- Treatment or secondary prophylaxis of MAC (with other antimycobacterials): 500 mg once daily.
- Tablets may be taken with or without food; if stomach upset occurs, taking with food may improve tolerance.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush or chew unless advised by your doctor.
- Take the dose at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels.
- Complete the full course of therapy even if you feel better before finishing the medication, to reduce the risk of recurrence and antibiotic resistance.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Clinical Benefits:
- Provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against many common respiratory, skin, and sexually transmitted pathogens.
- Convenient once-daily dosing and short treatment courses, which may improve adherence compared with some other antibiotics.
- Penetrates well into tissues and has a long half-life (approximately 68 hours), maintaining effective concentrations at the site of infection.
- Useful option in patients who cannot tolerate certain other antibiotics, as guided by susceptibility testing and physician assessment.
Warnings & Contraindications:
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics, or any component of the formulation.
- Use with caution in patients with pre-existing liver disease or impaired liver function; azithromycin is primarily eliminated by the liver.
- Use with caution in patients with kidney impairment, significant heart disease, history of arrhythmias, or known QT interval prolongation, or those taking other medicines that may prolong the QT interval.
- Antibiotic-associated diarrhea and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea may occur; if severe, persistent, or bloody diarrhea develops, contact your doctor immediately.
- Overuse or inappropriate use of antibiotics may promote the development of resistant bacteria; always use only under medical supervision and for confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infections.
- Consult your doctor before use if pregnant or planning pregnancy. Azithromycin should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a physician.
- Consult your doctor before use if breastfeeding; azithromycin may pass into breast milk. Your doctor will weigh potential benefits and risks.
- Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including antiarrhythmics, other antibiotics, anticoagulants (such as warfarin), antacids, and herbal supplements, to assess potential interactions.
- Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without a doctor’s prescription and supervision.
